An independent specialist offers something truly valuable: decades of model-specific experience with a personal touch. Mike’s Foreign Auto is more affordable than the dealership, faster on the models we know best, and you always have direct communication with the team working on your car. Many of our BMW customers have been with us for over thirty years.
Models We Specialize In

E30 (1982–1994)
318i, 325i, 325e, M3
The car that made BMW a household name. The E30 is mechanically straightforward but increasingly collectible. Common work includes timing belt service, cooling system overhaul, and suspension refresh. The M20 and S14 engines reward careful maintenance with exceptional longevity.

E36 (1990–1999)
318i, 325i, 328i, M3
A modern classic with the M50 and M52 inline sixes. Cooling system components are the most common failure point on these cars. Expansion tanks, water pumps, and thermostats should all be replaced proactively. The E36 M3 with the S50/S52 engine is one of the finest driver's cars BMW ever produced.

E46 (1998–2006)
323i, 325i, 328i, 330i, M3
The last of the purely mechanical BMWs. The M54 inline six is one of the best engines in BMW history. Key maintenance areas include the cooling system, VANOS seals, rear subframe reinforcement, and control arm bushings. A well-maintained E46 is a joy to drive and remarkably reliable.

E90/E92 (2005–2013)
325i, 328i, 335i, M3
The transition to turbocharged power. The N54 and N55 twin-turbo and single-turbo engines are powerful but require attention to charge pipes, wastegate rattle, and oil filter housing gaskets. The naturally aspirated N52 is considerably simpler to maintain.

E39 (1995–2003)
525i, 528i, 530i, 540i, M5
Widely regarded as the best 5 Series ever made. The M52 and M54 sixes are reliable and smooth. The V8-powered 540i and M5 demand more attention but reward it with exceptional performance.

E60 (2003–2010)
525i, 530i, 535i, 545i, M5

E34 (1988–1996)
525i, 530i, 535i, 540i, M5

F10 (2010–2017)
528i, 535i, 550i, M5

E38 (1994–2001)
740i, 740iL, 750iL
The flagship 7 Series. A beautifully engineered grand tourer that rewards proper maintenance with a superb driving experience.

F01 (2008–2015)
740i, 750i, 760Li

Common BMW Services
Engine Service
M20, M30, M50, M52, M54, S50, S52, N52, N54, N55. From the naturally aspirated classics to modern turbo sixes, we have deep experience with every generation of BMW inline engine. Oil leaks, VANOS repair, valve adjustments, and complete rebuilds.
Cooling Systems
BMW cooling systems are the most common failure point across nearly every model. Expansion tanks, water pumps, thermostats, radiators, and hoses all have finite lifespans. We recommend proactive replacement on higher-mileage cars to prevent overheating and potential engine damage.
Electrical & Electronics
Window regulators, instrument cluster repair, ABS modules, and general electrical diagnosis. BMWs are sophisticated electronically, and tracing an intermittent fault requires patience and experience. We have both.
Suspension
Control arm bushings, struts, shocks, sway bar links, and thrust arm replacement. A properly sorted BMW suspension is one of the best-handling setups on the road. We restore that factory precision.
Transmission
Manual transmission service, clutch replacement, SMG hydraulic systems, and DCT fluid service. Whether you prefer to row your own gears or let the computer do it, we keep the drivetrain in top condition.
Pre-Purchase Inspections
Considering a used BMW? We inspect the engine, transmission, suspension, cooling system, electrical systems, and all known failure points for that specific model. We will give you an honest assessment so you can buy with confidence.

“Honest, knowledgeable, and affordable. The kind of shop where the owner knows your car by heart. Highly recommend for any BMW owner in the South Bay.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Why choose an independent BMW specialist over a dealership?
An independent specialist like Mike's Foreign Auto offers over forty-five years of hands-on German car experience at a more affordable price than the dealership. You get direct communication with the team working on your car, faster turnaround, and the personal touch of a family-owned shop. For older BMW models that dealerships may no longer prioritize, a specialist with deep model-specific knowledge is the ideal choice.
What are the most common BMW repair issues?
Cooling system failures are the single most common issue across nearly all BMW models. Expansion tanks crack, water pumps fail, and thermostats stick. Beyond cooling, oil leaks from the valve cover gasket and oil filter housing gasket are extremely common on the N52, N54, and N55 engines. VANOS solenoid issues, window regulator failures, and worn suspension bushings are also frequent. Most of these are well-understood problems with straightforward solutions when you have the right experience.
How much does BMW maintenance cost at an independent shop?
Routine maintenance like oil changes, brake pads, and fluid services is very affordable and comparable to any other car. Model-specific work like cooling system overhauls, VANOS repair, or turbo service costs more due to parts and labor, but an independent specialist is typically thirty to fifty percent more affordable than a dealership for the same work. We always provide a detailed estimate before starting any job.
Are older BMWs expensive to maintain?
Older BMWs like the E30, E36, and E46 are actually quite reasonable to maintain when you stay on top of preventive service. Parts are widely available, the engines are mechanically straightforward, and a knowledgeable mechanic can diagnose issues quickly. The key is proactive maintenance, especially the cooling system, rather than waiting for components to fail. Many of our customers have been bringing their BMWs to us for over thirty years.
Should I get a pre-purchase inspection before buying a used BMW?
Absolutely. A pre-purchase inspection at Mike's Foreign Auto takes about an hour and covers the engine, transmission, cooling system, suspension, brakes, electrical systems, and every known failure point for that specific model and year. We look for deferred maintenance, evidence of overheating, oil leaks, and anything that would require immediate investment. The cost of an inspection is a small price compared to discovering a hidden problem after the purchase.
